Associations It is the largest lay organization in the United Kingdom, numbering some 700 brothers in the Brentwood Diocese alone. The Order was started in 1919 and achieved such things as work on Catholic Emancipation in the 1920’s, the Papal visit stewarding in 1981 and to celebrate the Millennium, raised in the region of £250, 000 for Wells for Water in India and Africa. Currently the Knights in Brentwood are developing a youth programme in conjunction with the Diocesan Youth Service. Social functions are held both at Provincial and local levels. Contacts Council 173 marked its 80th anniversary in 2007 with a very successful Dinner and Dance at a local Golf Club. Grand Knight Brother Frank Dodson said: "We were particularly pleased that our guests of honour included the Mayor and Mayoress of Brentwood Councillor and Mrs Frank Kenny, Mgr Bill Nix and the Provincial Grand Knight Brother Brian Dillon and Mrs Dillon. The function was a sell out thanks to the support of our many friends in the parishes. We are most grateful for that support." The Order as a whole will celebrate its 90th anniversary since its foundation in Glasgow in 1919 in 2009 through various events to be known as "A Spiritual Year".
